ReeFlex G-Series Lenses for iPhone (these look great!)
I have an iPhone 14+. Do you know of a gimbal that I can use and leave my phone case on?
Most gimbals will work with a phone case. It’s when you start attaching lenses and stuff you need to have heavier duty gimbals. So that means DJI, Zhiyun, FeiyuTech, etc. will pretty much all work fine.
No display lut, No record lut to clip, No h265 log… no use Final Cut camera 🙃
Yeah Blackmagic Camera app to the rescue.
Why is log not an option on my 13 pro? Is it due to storage? Thanks
No, it’s because Apple log only works on an iPhone 15 Pro.
@@iphoneographers Makes sense. Thank you!
NOICE
The live Multicam integrating into Final Cut directly is only reason to use that app. But will see your review on that other app.
Using HEVC+HDR, are the videos from Final Cut Camera "overly sharpened" similar to videos recorded using the stock camera app?
Yes, it’s the same bright HDR look.
@@iphoneographers if Apple wants FCC to be in the "professional league", it should have differentiated it from the overly sharpened videos as the native camera app.
Why do u need to underexpose on iphone?
When you auto expose it tends to slightly over expose the highlights. In the native camera app I leave the exposure compensation permanently on -0.3 or -0.7 if I’m out in bright sun.
@@iphoneographers thanks! I shoot all my music videos with the phone and am learning as I go, any recommends for add on lenses that work well in low light?
No lens that is going to help you just need to find well lit place to record your videos or get a couple of lights
@@AliazAfe i just want a lense, not to help with the light. I was just wondering since he has a cool lense rig in the background
@@deareeMusic what phone do you have?
@iphoneographers do you have quality loss and vinyetting when using the m-mount to 37mm adapter with the beastgrip 1.7x as well?
I haven’t seen any, but I’ve only used the telephoto. A wide angle might vignette.
I’ve played with this app. What this is, is exactly that, an in between app. For many people, including budding pros, the Blackmagic app is way too complex. Most do t. End all the features and the confusion they can generate. Typically with Apple, they try to come out with features many will want and need, and not supply those they don’t. Then there will be a smaller percentage that needs, or at least, think they need the extra features. But as always, Apple will add features to this app as time goes by and in a couple,e of years, people will just use it and not think about what it may have been missing in the beginning. With that in mind, this is really a beta more than anything else, so we’ll see what they do with it over the coming months after the new phones are released mid September.
At least the gave us something better than the stock app. I used the stock app when I first got the 15pro max. I was complaining about no mic indicator on it. Now it is there. I still use black magic as my goto though. Nice to have an upgraded stock app. That is the way I am looking at it.
Agreed, I’m happy they’re at least embracing more manual controls/features.
For an actioin 4, if adappter is not an issue, what lav mic would you recommend for cycliing videos in city. Looking for clear vooise and some background nooise.
Might be best to go with a wireless mic for that. Maybe the RODE Wireless Pro or DJI mics. And in a perfect world you’d really want a more directional lav mic versus an omnidirectional which most are, but they should work fine.
Has anyone else used this lens with the Smallrig iPhone 15 Pro cage and the M-mount to 37mm adapter? For me, the corners are very very soft. Anyone else have this problem?
I’d have to do more testing, but I haven’t noticed any issues with the telephoto. It’s definitely possible though it could be an alignment thing.
@@iphoneographers I appreciate the response. I ordered BeastGrips cage for my 15 Pro. I am hoping because its their lens and their cage, it will fix the issue. If not, i assume its a faulty lens. I will find out Wednesday! Thanks again
Do they have a mode for DOF Adapter planned? Would be nice
That’s not for them to do.
Doubtful.
Is there any chance we can get a chart about all the information mentioned in the video? I mean the facts( weight, mounting options, accessories), not image quality etc.
Based on a lot of the comments mentioning this app lacks a lot of features they like in the photo app… Could you just clarify that the final cut app is primarily intended for video, not photos, right?
Correct. It’s a video camera app.
I have done any video work in a few years, do people actually use iPhones for professional use? It seems by the time you buy the cage and lenses and mic and everything, you would be better off with a dslr or whatever prosumer video camera people are using now? Thanks for the video.
iPhones have been and are used in professional video all the time. In my experience mostly not as the main camera, but as a B camera or as b-roll camera in combination with a traditional setup. I know corporate video producers use them as main cameras for interviews routinely though. Especially at events and such, and news stations use iPhone video all the time and have for years.
I must be missing something, because it cannot seem to drop into macro mode like the basic built in camera app, which is so useful.
Yeah that’s a good point, same with that 48mm virtual lens. It’s missing several features from the native camera that I would hope they would bring over.
Cool setup. Do you know of a hub which will will work with an iPhone 15 Pro Max and output video of USB-C to a USB-C video monitor? I have a few USB-C hubs, none of them will allow video output through the USB-C ports (the monitor works fine if I plug it into the phone directly).
I haven’t tried that as I’ve only used HDMI output which works well. The one thing to check is that you’re using a data transfer port and not a charging port. You could also try an HDMI to USB-C adapter… amzn.to/4eXcWSb
Why is this not simply integrated into ios 18?
Good question, thought the same thing. I guess since it integrates with Final Cut they look at it as almost a third-party app.
im not familiar with the DOF adapter , Are there SPECIFIC lenses that can be used on it to give the best Clarity?
They recommend telephoto, so really anything over 50mm and also an aperture of f/2.8 or faster. The nature of the DOF creates a focus vignette, but the longer lenses minimize being able to see that.
@@iphoneographers Thank You
👍🏼
If you don't mind me asking sir, what cage is that and adapter for your phone sir, thank you for the video and sorry to bother you sir. Thank you for your video
The cage I’m shooting is from Beastgrip and that’s their DOF adapter. The cage I’m actually using is also from beastgrip and it’s their classic Beastgrip Pro universal cage. I’ve got links in the description if you want to learn more.
@iphoneographers thank you alot sir for your video and your time and your response have a great day, thank you again
the bitrate is lower compare to blackmagic camera app
I haven’t tested that, but it’s possible in HEVC. However unfortunately you can’t adjust the bitrate in blackmagic it’s just auto set like the native camera. But ProRes is the same.
10 seconds hvec on fcp was about 26.9mb and on bm was 47.2mb.
No bluetooth remote functionality. Kills me.
Yeah very limited options currently.
it should be standard on a iPhone
why is everything only for iPhone or Samsung Galaxy? -.- why is there not a real universal mount that don't covers half of your display...
Lens/gear brands tell me that the overwhelming majority of their sales are for iPhone. But I do wish there was more of a universal mount. But I guess in a way it’s similar to traditional cameras where every manufacturer has their own (Sony, Canon, etc.) and then we have to use adapters.
I don’t get this, especially since they used the black magic app for the last November MacBook event
I tend to agree. But Apple is known for using other companies apps like FiLMiC Pro and Blackmagic and then doing their own thing. Although again, this doesn’t compete with those apps.
I'll stick to Blackmagic.
Thank you so much for this review! Very well done! I'm with you. With all other more professional and feature-laden options out there, I really don't see myself using this. With all the work that goes into creating these apps, it makes me wonder what is the value they think they're providing consumers with this app. Thanks again!
They are targeting people who don’t know that other camera apps exist. RUclipsrs and Instagramers will froth over this.
One of the advantages of computational photography on iPhone video is the Auto HDR feature, which stacks exposures to increase dynamic range and stop windows blowing out etc - but sadly, this doesn't seem to be available on the Final Cut Camera app. Did I miss something?
This is a watered down version, but none of the photography stuff has been brought over to my knowledge. It does have HDR but I’m not sure how it’s captured in regards to any computational stuff.
@@iphoneographers Auto HDR works on video as well as photography. The HDR setting it has is simply the format, meaning it will play back with higher tonal values. People get confused between these things - they should've called Auto HDR what it is - exposure stacking. Thanks for the video anyway!
@@rosskinghorn I don't think they are the same "HDR". 15's photos has Smart HDR 5 which is the computational photography stacking. The default app video format on the other hand is 10 bit in HDR(HLG) Rec 2020. LOG is also 10 bit that you can convert into HDR or SDR rec 709. There isn't any video computational stacking.
@@T-pj8sr Sure is. Annoyingly I can't post images here to demonstrate, but next time you're pointing your camera towards a window or the sky and it's blown-out/overexposed, tap on the screen in that area and you'll see the exposure adjust, but the areas that aren't blown out will stay the same. That's stacking.
IPhone and Android?
Since it’s Final Cut Cam, as in Final Cut Pro (which is only Mac) my guess would be … iPhone ;)
But no internal h265 log... so the blackmagic one is the way to go still.
If you are using log why would you want h265 compression on it? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?
@@closeben What? - LOG allows you to have around 13 stops of dynamic range and more like 7 without LOG. So you can lower those highlights or push those shadows. H.265 10bit compression gives you 95% of the ProRes quality but instead of saving each frame as is, it calculates the difference between frames, if part of the image didn't change, the encoder knows to repeat it from the previous frame with an offset say. So you get either a minimal or often indistinguishable difference in quality at 10% of the file size. The only downside is your editing machine must be powerful enough to decode the H.265.
@@DigiDriftZonegreat explanation. As you mention H.265 is taxing on your computer but proxies are the saviour there.
@@OfficialDJTazer that’s right and modern Apple silicon and good GPUs can actually deal with h265 directly, but if you’re working with a film studio and everyone is already using ProRes, you may need to use it too. But are they filming with phones? In most cases you are still better off shooting in h265 and converting to ProRes after.
Yes, for anything more advanced Blackmagic is definitely the way to go.
capcut on pc is reeeaaallly underrated!!!! but: you need to know what your doing + if you know how to cut, blend in music, use simple effects, you dont need capcut really... i especially love the zoom in and outs (the non linear ones, you can do it in advanced settings)... alot of stuff really benefits from 60 fps and looks ULTRA SMOOTH on video and gives this "premium youtube video" feeling... i would always export capcut to 60 fps if you upload to youtube
Thanks much mate 😊❤ A bit too fast for me I couldn’t see where you locked off exposure or shutter angle I will watch again and pause it on there
1:44 makes me think of how they did Star Wars with Models on blue screen
Can I use this to record a podcast on iPhone with two microphones?
Yes you can.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks for the great info, very much appreciated. Very good research. You saved me from making a purchasing mistake.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching.
Like this video. Nice info.
Great video. Question though: If shooting RAW with Halide application for example on iPhone 15 pro: wide lens 24mm x 1 will become a 40mm. Still gonna be a 48MP raw photo or way less? I need 48MP for shooting a painting but the original 24mm on iPhone 15pro and need 48MP RAW image for decent printing definition (300DPI) Thanks your great work!
As long as you use the main 24mm 1X lens you’ll get the 48MP. Regardless of what conversion lens you put on it. That’s really the beauty of it. It also makes it more useful in low light (for different looks) and also for creating more shallow depth of field.
@@iphoneographers Thanks a lot for clarification!
You mentioned only the ProRes was available via USB. But I have the iPhone 11 and using the apple card reader (via lightening port), I'm able to record H264 to a mico SD card directly. I'll have to test this again and see if they changed it.
That hasn’t been an option until USB-C and the 15 Pro, so I’m not sure how you were doing that unless maybe there’s a hack of some kind. Now you could send a 1080 video signal out that was highly compressed and you could see it on an external monitor, but it wasn’t for recording. And you had to use an HDMI adapter to get to the monitor. And it was only available in certain apps like Filmic Pro or LumaFusion, though you could also do a screen recording for a tutorial to an Atomos recorder.
instead of a T7 hanging off like that, why not use a tiny USB thumb drive like PNY 512GB Elite-X Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive?
Sure you could do that I didn’t have any fast thumb drives or ones with enough storage.
I bought this gimbal but can you tell me which cage is best for s22 ultra please
I don’t have that phone, but the one I’m using in this video is universal the Beastgrip Pro and I like it a lot for a variety of different phones. amzn.to/3xpdkYG
Would you recommend freewell nd filters?
Definitely, use them all the time. They’re probably my favorite “affordable“ filters. Those and Moment are also good. Polar Pro are probably the best but they’re also the most expensive.
Both of them handled the high contrast foliage badly in the upper part of the frame. The 58mm is certainly a miss, too many issues.
Just clapping and thanking 👏
Can you put this on a smallrig case?
Not at this point. Maybe they’ll add a Freewell mount option one day though.
i'm on an iphone 13 pro. why does the blackmagic camera app does support 1080p 240fps like the native camera app does? or do i have to find a setting to do that?
They don’t support it on the 15 Pro either. Not sure why. Total guess maybe it dropped frames or potentially it got a lot of artifacts. The 120 doesn’t look very good. I would personally stick to 4K 60.
@@iphoneographers yeah I know the quality won’t be great. I just need an app to have a fixed lens, fixed iso and fixed shutter angle at high frame rates. I don’t really want to pay for filmic pro just for that hahaha
